6 issues to pay attention to when selecting inductors

What aspects should be considered when selecting inductors? When selecting inductors, it is necessary to consider their performance parameters (inductance, rated current, quality factor, etc.) and whether the size meets the requirements. In actual selection, the following six items should be noted:  ① The inductance should match the circuit requirements; especially the inductance value of the tuning circuit coil must be precise. When the inductance is too large or too small, the number of turns of the coil can be reduced or increased to meet the requirements. For coils with adjustable magnetic cores, the core should be adjusted to the middle position during measurement and debugging. When the inductance differs significantly, series or parallel methods can be used to solve the problem.  ② The higher the Q value, the better. Two inductors.

② The higher the Q value, the better. When two inductors have the same inductance value, the one with the smaller size can be selected based on the definition of Q value (XL/R), or the one with the same value but larger wire diameter can be used.
 
③ The applied voltage and the current passing through cannot exceed their rated values.
 
④ For inductors with insulation strength requirements, it is necessary to select packaging materials with high voltage resistance. Generally, inductors with good voltage resistance also have good moisture resistance, and using resin impregnation, encapsulation, and die-casting processes can meet this requirement.
 
⑤ The leads or pins of the inductor mainly consider tensile strength, torsional strength, soldering resistance, and solderability. When components have been out of the factory for more than six months, solderability tests should be conducted again to ensure the reliability of soldering.
 
⑥ For surface mount inductors, the pad size designed should be referenced when selecting. If selecting inductors with leads, under the premise of no clear specifications and sufficient installation space, vertical and horizontal inductors with the same parameters can be interchanged.
